They’d found him washed up on a beach, battered escape pod barely intact. Raleigh and Mako were still in the medical wing of the Shatterdome when the news trickled down, Ranger Hansen is alive, Stacker ejected him last minute, don’t know his status, velcroed to each other because the drift burn was still so fucking intense they just can’t let go.
Raleigh tries, when he hears the news because Chuck’s last words to him, specifically, still ring in his goddamn head but he can’t tear himself out away from Mako just yet and they’re being watched too closely for him to escape anyway. So instead he lays there limp against her, letting her pet his hair and tell him it’s okay, things will be okay and he’s fucking ashamed because she just lost her father and she’s the one comforting Raleigh.
They’re tangled up in each other for hours, maybe days, he loses track and he’s not sure how long they’re really there. Eventually the new Marshal comes down, talks to them and Raleigh barely remembers what’s said because he’s just as anxious as the Marshal to get into Chuck’s room, see if he’s alright, how he’s doing. He doesn’t like the things that he’s hearing head wound, bad, possible amnesia and he wants to see for himself and the first chance he gets, that’s where he goes.
He’s tapping on the door, checking to see if Chuck’s awake, lingering at the door like he’s not sure if he should go in or not.
